Tuesday 6th July - Milford Sound

We (Mikey) got up early to see if the road was going to be open today and reported that a prognosis for tomorrow would be given at 3pm. I went back to sleep. One of the local boat companies had put on a free fishing trip that I was briefly interested in joining, until I remembered yesterday's encounter with the sea, and recalled my family's previous sea fishing experience. The weather certainly wasn't suggesting I should go out anywhere, so instead I spent most of the day sitting in the living room, being tormented by four bored children who drove their big plastic go-carts into everyone.

We took a brief drive up the road to see how far along it was closed, and after only ten minutes or so we found the barrier and could go no further. We drove back, still not having seen anything of Milford Sound.

By three the road condition sign said that they anticipate the road may reopen by the weekend, which didn't soound too promising. To try to appease everyone the hostel organised a pasta supper and a couple of films at the pub, so we went along with it. The pasta was nice (but, like everything else here, very expensive) and the first film (Monsoon Wedding) was nice too. The second film, Mean Machine, was the biggest waste of ninety minutes I have experienced, and I could actually feel my life dribbling away as I sat there. But there was nothing else to do! So that was Tuesday!
